Helpful Hints to Save You Money

The key to a successful, economical, and efficient move is all the preparation. The following tips and tricks should give you a good starting point when preparing for a move.

First and foremost, pack yourself

Packing is the number one way to save money. Using the proper materials and taping each box top & bottom can help you avoid paying for damaged items or having to replace them entirely.

If you’d rather leave the packing to a professional, Mooney’s Moving & Storage offers packing assistance.

Dismantling and reassembly

Anytime your movers have to use tools to dismantle or reassemble an item, it adds on more time cost to your local move as you are typically billed by the time taken. If possible have items requiring tools (i.e. beds, cribs, and exercise equipment) taken care of prior to moving day.  Gas dryers & refrigerators with water lines should be handled by plumbers before move day.

Centralize your boxes

Typically, boxes will make up 15% to 20% of your total shipment. As you pack, move your boxes to a central area like the garage or a front room. This way, you can save time when it comes to moving them out of your home. Additionally, more time and money can be saved if your boxes are delivered to a central area at your destination.

Unnecessary
Items

Do not move or items that will not be used at your new home (i.e. books, record albums, exercise equipment, rugs, old tools). If they're just going to go into storage at your place, it's probably not worth moving.

Donate to Your Favorite Charity

After you’ve decided what items you no longer need, consider donating them to charity. Itemizing items and keeping donation receipts may help you qualify for a tax deduction.

Ask Friends
For Help

Having your friends and family around to help out on or before moving day will help you get the job done more quickly than you would alone and can help keep you organized.

Be Available on Moving Day

It is important for you to be available to your movers to help coordinate and answer questions while loading and unloading your moving truck.

If the descriptions of your move changes from what you described to your estimator, it is imperative that you make your mover aware prior to moving day. Our movers will be prepared to pack only the items listed on your estimate.

Home
Appliances

We only move empty freezers/refrigerators. Also, be sure to have waters lines/gas lines disconnected prior to our arrival or secure the services of a plumber to take care of this before you meet with our movers.

Flat Screen Televisions

At Mooney's Moving & Storage, we do not mount or unmount anything to/from the wall. If the TV is free-standing we will pad wrap this item on move day.

Non-Allowables

When you are planning your move, there are some common household items that should not be included in your shipment. This includes...

    • Bleach
    • House paints
    • Open containers of liquid
    • Propane tanks or cans
    • Gas or oils
    • Butane
    • Ammunition
    • Alcohol containers
    • Open non-sealed food containers
    • Aerosols
    • Fire Extinguishers
    • Welding Gas
    • Antifreeze
    • Disinfectant cleaners (especially those that contain bleach or ammonia)
